Foundation is the hardest product to buy online. Too light and your face looks grey; too dark and it looks muddy next to your neck. The good news: with a few simple checks at home, you can choose the right shade without a store tester.
1. Match to your neck, not your hand
Your face is often a little darker or more tanned than your neck. Foundation should blend your face into your neck, so always compare shades with your jawline and neck – never the back of your hand.
2. Work out your undertone
Look at the veins on your wrist in daylight. Greenish veins mean a warm (yellow or golden) undertone; blue or purple means cool (pink) undertone; a mix means neutral. Most Pakistani skin tones are warm or neutral, so shades with a yellow or golden base usually look most natural. A foundation that is too pink is the most common reason for a grey or ashy look.
3. Pick the right formula for your skin type
- Oily skin: choose an oil-free, matte foundation and set it with powder. Our Oil Free Liquid Foundation is made for long, humid days.
- Dry skin: moisturise first and choose a creamy or satin formula; avoid heavy powder.
- Combination skin: use a lightweight foundation and powder only the T-zone.
4. When in doubt, go slightly warmer
If you are stuck between two shades, choose the warmer one. A slightly warm foundation looks natural in photos; a slightly cool or pink one looks grey, especially under yellow wedding lights.
5. Use concealer and powder to perfect the match
You do not need a perfect foundation match if the rest of your base is smart. A concealer half a shade lighter brightens under-eyes, and a translucent setting powder keeps everything in place for hours. A pore filler primer underneath helps foundation sit smoothly and last longer.
6. Test properly when your order arrives
Apply a small stripe on your jawline and check it in daylight near a window after 10 minutes – foundation often oxidises (gets slightly darker) once it settles. If the shade disappears into your skin, it is the one.
